Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs you enter, by the method stated below it. The only constants HeadcountDesk supplies are the published federal payroll tax rates and the overtime multiplier, each cited where it is used. The defaults are a worked example to replace with your own.
Types of employees, as the law and the payroll see them: full-time and part-time, which is a matter of hours; exempt and non-exempt, which is a matter of the overtime rule; permanent, temporary and seasonal, which is a matter of the contract's end date; and, standing outside all of those, the independent contractor, who is not an employee at all. The employee contract builder on this site writes the contract for each type from your figures, free and without an account; HeadcountDesk Pro keeps it against the person.

Full-time and part-time
A matter of hours per week, set by the employer's policy and by the thresholds that benefits and the law attach to it. The handbook says what full-time means here; the contract says which the employee is.
Exempt and non-exempt
Unless exempt, employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act must receive overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek at not less than time and one-half their regular rate, per the Department of Labor. Exempt status depends on the duties test and the salary threshold, and a title does not make a role exempt. The contract states which, and the free PTO and overtime calculator on this site splits the overtime for the non-exempt.
Permanent, temporary, seasonal
The contract's end date or its absence. A temporary employee is still an employee for tax, overtime and the handbook; only the end date differs. The free employee contract builder on this site writes each.
The contractor, who is none of these
An independent contractor is engaged, not employed: no withholding, no overtime, no handbook, their own tools and their own clients. Calling an employee a contractor is the classification error with the largest bill. From the vendors' own pricing pages: Homebase lists Essentials at $24 per location per month billed annually or $30 monthly, with a free Basic plan for one location of up to ten employees; BambooHR lists Core at $10 and Pro at $17 per employee per month; Deputy lists Core at $6.50 per user per month. HeadcountDesk Pro is $24 a month per location.
Types of employees: common questions
What are the main types of employees?
Full-time or part-time by hours; exempt or non-exempt by the overtime rule; permanent, temporary or seasonal by the contract's end date. A contractor is not an employee.
Does a part-time employee get overtime?
If non-exempt, yes, for hours over 40 in the workweek at time and one-half, like any other non-exempt employee.
Is the contract builder free?
Yes. The free employee contract builder on this site writes the contract for each type with no account. Pro keeps it against the employee.
