Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs you enter, by the method stated below it. The only constants HeadcountDesk supplies are the published federal payroll tax rates and the overtime multiplier, each cited where it is used. The defaults are a worked example to replace with your own.

A temporary employee is an employee with an end date: the same withholding, the same overtime rule if non-exempt, the same handbook, the same I-9, the same file, and a contract that says when it ends and what happens if it is extended. What a temporary employee is not is a contractor, and calling one the other is the classification error with the largest bill. The employee contract builder on this site writes the fixed-term contract from your figures, free and without an account; HeadcountDesk Pro keeps it against the person with the end date reminder.

What is the same

Withholding, the employer's taxes, workers' compensation, the overtime rule, the handbook acknowledgement, the I-9, the file. The free employee contract builder on this site writes the contract with the same terms and an end date.

What the contract adds

The end date, the notice either side can give before it, what happens if the work runs past it, and whether benefits apply and from when. The end-date reminder is what stops a temporary role becoming permanent by accident.

What it is not

A contractor. A temporary employee works your hours with your equipment under your direction; a contractor does not. The tests are the IRS's and the state's, and the label on the contract does not decide them.

At the end

Final pay with any payout the policy sets, the equipment returned, the file retained. Pro reminds you before the date. From the vendors' own pricing pages: Homebase lists Essentials at $24 per location per month billed annually or $30 monthly, with a free Basic plan for one location of up to ten employees; BambooHR lists Core at $10 and Pro at $17 per employee per month; Deputy lists Core at $6.50 per user per month. HeadcountDesk Pro is $24 a month per location.

Temporary employee: common questions

Do temporary employees get overtime?

Can I extend a temporary contract?

Yes, in writing, with a new end date; repeated extensions are a sign the role is permanent.

Is the contract builder free?

Yes. The free employee contract builder on this site writes the fixed-term contract with no account.
