Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs you enter, by the method stated below it. The only constants HeadcountDesk supplies are the published federal payroll tax rates and the overtime multiplier, each cited where it is used. The defaults are a worked example to replace with your own.

Questions to ask a new hire, at the three moments they earn their keep: before day one, the questionnaire's practical items; at the end of week one, whether the machinery of onboarding worked; and at the end of month one, whether the job is the one described and what nearly went wrong. Each answer maps to a checklist fix or a retention signal. The onboarding checklist on this site carries all three sets, free and without an account; HeadcountDesk Pro sends them and files the answers against the employee.

Before day one

The practical set: name and contacts, tax and bank forms, I-9 documents, equipment and access, accommodations. Collected in one questionnaire so day one is about the job.

End of week one

Was everything ready? Did you know where to go and who to ask? Was your first task real work? What confused you that we should fix for the next person? Each no becomes a checklist change.

End of month one

Is the job as described? What has not landed in training? What has been hardest? What would have made you look elsewhere? These are the retention questions, and gallup puts the cost of replacing an employee at one-half to two times the employee's annual salary, and calls that a conservative estimate.

Asked by a person, answered to a person

From the manager, in a conversation with notes, not a form into a void; and the follow-through on last month's answers is what makes next month's honest. From the vendors' own pricing pages: Homebase lists Essentials at $24 per location per month billed annually or $30 monthly, with a free Basic plan for one location of up to ten employees; BambooHR lists Core at $10 and Pro at $17 per employee per month; Deputy lists Core at $6.50 per user per month. HeadcountDesk Pro is $24 a month per location.
